Default Tiptronic Question

When I have the transmission in Tiptronic mode sometimes when I come to a stop it will shift back into 1st gear and sometimes it stops at 2nd gear. When I shift the first time after starting again I end up shifting into 3rd when I think I'm going into 2nd. Is this normal behavior in Tiptronic mode?

Yes-ish. The computer will automatically shift for you if you make it. You can run around in tip mode, and the computer will shift at redline and downshift to prevent a stall. So, the whole downshifting to 1st at a stop doesn't surprise me. If you dpto a rolling stop, it prolly will let you get away with stopping in 2nd... complete stop will make it go to 1st regardless.

The whole skipping second thing does surprise me, though. Are you running right to the redline? If so, the computer may be shifting for you just as you plan on, so, ultimately, the car shifts twice: once on its own and once by you.

Thanks for the reply. Here's the scenario:

Driving along shifting up before getting to redline.
Come to a red light and stop (letting transmission down shift by itself).
Signal changes green and I accelerate. Car starts off in 2nd gear.

Sometimes it does this and other times it starts in 1st gear. Doesn't seem to be any consistency as to whether it starts in 1st or 2nd.

Yes I would say it's normal. Mine does that too. However, I believe there is a time window that if you remain completely stopped - and I mean dead stopped no rolling - it will downshift to 1 after the time windows passes. How long is this window? I don't know. I never timed it. You can always override however - either downshifting to 1 or upshifting to 2 as the case may be. There may also be some smart logic in the trans controller too affecting the shifts. Honda has something called "grade logic" in their automatics which can sense when you are going uphill or downhill. Maybe there's some similar logic in these tiptronics influencing the shift points.

yeah... sometimes mine will let me start in second, and other times it won't... seems to be random.
