Default mileage on the clutch

at about what mileage should i start to worry about replacing the clutch on my 99 2.0 5 speed. i have had her for about 11 months and 2.5 weeks (got her on april 17th of last year. the cluthch isnt what it was a year ago, but it still seems to be fairly strong. I just dont want this to coem up as an "un-expected" expense, and would rather be somewhat prepared for this event.

Depends on how it was used. The clutch can last the life of the car.

I have 11 years and 92k miles on the car and the clutch is still doing great.

I'm at 95,000 and on my original clutch. I have never been really all that nice to it either. I learned how to drive a manual on my bug ... and it is still going strong. Just had it checked out yesterday.

The life of a stock clutch can vary quite a bit, there are quite a few variables that determine things. I've seen cars with 150k on the stock clutch and others than needed to have it replaced at 40k.

We do have our Stage 1 replacement kits available, they are much less expensive than the OEM units and offer more holding power with the exact same stock pedal feel. The OEM dual mass flywheels are extremely expensive to replace, so the kits include a larger single mass flywheel and slightly larger clutch disc.

I believe Beetlemania has more than 230K on his original clutch. He carries a spare "just in case".

i find that amazing, that is alot of mileage on a clutch. but, then again, thats what happens when you take real good care of your car.

my car had 9.5 years and an unknown amount of miles when the clutch failed.

i was running an ecs stage3 unit, which has been replaced with a ecs stage1 02M unit (my transmission died in january and was replaced with a 6speed).

i have NO idea for sure how many miles are on my car as the cluster has been replaced and the previous mileage was not documented accurately.

i can tell you it failed 7,000 miles after i threw it on the road again, and the transmission died 15,000 miles after that.

we'll say the clutch had 340,000 miles on it?

Awesome! Just note the 7lb flywheel will produce a pretty good amount of gear chatter. I typically prefer the 14lb or 20.5lb kits, the 14lb kit has been our best selling clutch kit for quite a few years now.

486,000 miles on my old 86 Jetta diesel clutch and still working perfect. Then again it only had 52hp to deal with.

My New Beetle has an extra 100lb/ft of torque from new, is still holding strong *for now* and is showing almost 70,000 miles.

My Ducati 916 popped it's clutch at just 1400 miles, blew it's head gasket at 2500 miles and snapped it's cam belt at 5000 miles at which point Ducati bought it back. Sometimes ish just happens.

that is good to know, thanks for pointing that out. I would have been fairly mad about the gear chatter had i done that because this is still my daily driver, and that would be rather annoying. 14lb it is
