Default No 4th Gear on Automatic

My car died so I didn't drive it for 3 years until I had the engine rebuilt and the camshaft replaced. I went to drive it again for the first time and the car seemed to be in limp mode because it would go in to 3rd gear but never past it. Instead around 30mph the engine would just rev up and not accelerate.

I figured it was the sensors on the transmission since the antifreeze poured out all over during a bleed. So I just replaced all 3 sensors on the transmission. I reset the transmission and took it for a drive but now it will go up to 55mph but the rpms will hit 4,000 if I take it past that. It seems like it won't go past 3rd gear.

I am getting 3 codes:
P0722: Output Speed Sensor Circ No Signal
P0715: Input Turbine/Speed Sensor Circ. Malfunction
P0730: Gear Incorrect Ratio

The same codes I was getting before I replaced the sensors and I have tried clearing them but they come back.

I am open to any suggestions. I never had any transmission problems before the engine died.

Any ideas?

These engines do rev high, 3000rpm is normal at 60mph so are you sure it is going to over-rev?

If you are stuck in 3rd then scan it for codes, it should tell you why.

I am still getting the same 3 codes that are in my first post but from what I read on here those codes are typically caused by the bad sensors I replaced.

I am pretty much dumbfounded because new sensors should fix the problem. At least that's what I thought.

It may be something that has to do with the computer in the car, sometimes resetting the ECU can fix this problem, just disconnect the negative battery cable and reset

Tried disconnecting the battery to reset the computer and didn't work. Still getting the same 3 codes. Took the car our for a drive and around 65mph the car is pushing 5000rpms.

I would hate to replace the transmission or even worse take it to the stealership so they can have a field day with it and my wallet.

Any other ideas?

Does the car accelerate quickly in final gear, if it does, then its not in fourth gear, it could be a major problem with the transmission, it could be the ECU confused, it could be a problem with the transmission fluid too

Did you clear the CEL after you replaced the sensors?

if you didn't clear the codes, the car won't shift into 4th.

I did clear the codes after changing the sensors and I still get them coming back up after I drive the car a bit.

The car accelerates and when I'm at 55mph its at 4,000rpms. If I go faster the rpms never drop they just keep going higher until it redlines.

Something I just noticed is that my fog lights aren't working either. I changed the fuse and still not working. They were fine before all this started. Now I'm wondering if it's an electrical thing.

Maybe when the antifreeze spilled all over the engine it shorted out a few wires? How can I check this? Maybe there is a piece that controls several things that blew?

Can you tell I'm not a car buff? hahahahha

Thanks for all the help so far.

stealership will do absolutely nothing but give you price quotes and guesses on whats the real culprit. seems as if your speed sensor is messed up. also incorrect gear ratio? last tranny problem I had with my 99 1.8T was my shift solenoid E circuit. after I replaced that and resetted my tranny with VagCom it went completly away. I tried disconnecting the battery and it didnt do anything. so if you want to reset it, vag com is the best to go

OK here is a quick update:

Took the car to a mechanic friend and he took a look at things. He says that there is a short and that is why it's not shifting properly and why my fog lights have gone out as well. His recommendation was that I take it to a mechanic that specializes in electrical issues.

Now I have to find someone who will do this because I'm not sure it's something I can do myself. I checked all the fuses and they are fine so I got that part down.

Has anyone dealt with any shorts regarding transmissions or even fog lights? How do I find the short? How do I even fix it?

Anyone in the Hudson Valley, NY area know of someone that can fix this for me?
