The automatic transmission is the most over looked part of a car during service. Regularly servicing your automatic transmission can help ensure that you don't get caught off guard by an expensive repair bill.

ECS has put together a complete automatic transmission service kit for the 4 speed automatic that includes the following:

* Transmission Filter
* Transmission Pan Gasket
* Transmission Drain plug and crush washer
* Tramsmission Fill Plug
* 4 liters of Pentosin ATF

how come no one ever sells the little red cap cover thing with the kits? You have to go to VW to get it, it's only like $2! That would be nice if someone could include that in the kit so you would be completely set and not have to run to VW for a $2 part.

01M is massively under cooled and then has Volkswagen recommended service intervals of 'never'. Just do this every 20,000 to 40,000 miles and you will double if not triple the life of your automatic. It's THAT big of a deal. The fluid might be lifetime but so then is the dirt created by wearing friction materials. These materials cause excess wear unless removed on a regular basis.

Please be smart and ya even on my manual I have changed my fluid 3x and am coming up on number 4 at 80,000. I change mine every 20,000 regardless of what type of transmission or lifetime differential I'm supposed to have.

The transmission fluid / filter change on an automatic transmission is a bit more involved than a manual, but certainly still in the DIY range. There are a few requirements for the DIY change though:

- car must be totally up in the air (all 4 corners)
- temps need to be monitored with VAG-COM

The car needs to be up in the air because once the fluid and filter are changed out, the car needs to be started and put into gear to warm things up, then the fluid level checked (and typically a bit more added). Having the car level ensures the transmission is filled back to the correct level.

I know I need to do mine too, I am going to do it during my TB change around 85k-90k miles. I've got the 6 Speed DSG, saw you guys have that kit on there too. It also has never been serviced, never knew it needed it until I found this website, but it's still running good. No slips or hard shifts (knock on wood ) lol

I would not delay on this. The fluid is supposed to be changed every 40k or else bad things do happen. Remember that this transmission is at least $6500 to replace.
