Default tiptronic trans failure

Just returned from the VW dealer. I have an 03 Beetle with a 6 speed automatic transmission. The dealer says the transmission is shot and has to be replaced. That it cannot be rebuilt/repaired. Is this true?

First of all, i'd advise you to get a second opinion if you can. Vw dealerships aren't known to be the best when it comes to working on their own cars sometimes...

Have you been taking care of your transmission? Fluid changes every 40k miles and the like? I don't think i've ever heard of any problems with Vw's 6speed Tiptronic other than the "manual" function to stop working due to the magnets.

I've certainly heard of the tiptronics failing. They aren't as bad as the 01M but they are still a VW auto trans. The only transmission that requires 40k changes are the DSG I believe.

What exactly is going on with your transmission? How many miles? Did they say why "it was shot"?
