transmission cooler bypass?

1998 new beetle 2.0 gas automatic transmission

I have a question about the somewhat football shaped "transmission cooler" on the trans with 2 hose connections, what goes in and out of it? Does engine coolant flow through it into the transmission or does transmission fluid flow out through the radiator?

The fluids are mixing and i was wondering if i can just run the hose from inlet to outlet and basically bypass the trans cooling until I have the time and money to fix it right.

engine coolant goes thru it, and heats up the trans fluid.. it is a piss poor design that shortens the life of the tranny due to the overly hot ATF temperatures.

a proper in front of the radiator mounted trans cooler is a good mod for these trannys.

Where can I get a kit to do mod like this?

Since engine coolant runs through the stock transmission cooler, I assume the engine water pump pushes the coolant through the trans, or not? If an auxillary cooler is added in series with the stock trans cooler and filled with transmission fluid, what will pump it? Or does an inline pump need to be added also?

If you have coolant and AFT mixing in the trans cooler, DON"T DRIVE THE CAR! The coolant will damage the tranny. A new tranny can cost more than the car is worth.

If you noticed oil in the coolant, are you sure it isn't from the engine (blown head gasket)?
