2002 Beetle; Reverse, 1st and 3rd problems

Hi All ~ I have a 2002 manual beetle (66,000 miles) that just suddenly began having transmission issues. It is really difficult to get in and out of reverse, will pop out of 1st if on a decline without giving it gas and will grind and pop out of 3rd if not held securely into 3rd until the clutch has been completely released.

I have called a few mechanics and each one seems to have a different theory, including linkage, syncho, needing a whole new transmission, sliders, etc. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into this issue and knows how much it will cost. Also, will it damage the transmission to continue to drive it with these issues?

I would start by checking the fluid level and / or changing out the fluid, those can be symptoms of low fluid. I would say you probably run the risk of doing more damage if you continue driving it.
