Angry Transmisson Problems

So. I got my car, everything else is fine. But it jerks in between 2 and 3rd gear... took it to the dealer, they said it was gonna be the valve body.

Now they hooked it up the diagnostics and said it was the transmission. But I am a college student, and cannot afford a new one.
Is there anything else I should tell them to try? Anything else I can do? I am just gonna have to keep driving it until it gets bad.. because this was supposed to be my new, reliable car for driving back and forth.

Any suggestions on what I can do??

By the way, the code that came up was P0730 (incorrect gear ratio).

I know that some of you are way more knowledgeable about this kind of thing and can probably be more helpful than the guys at the VW dealership.

He also said he wouldn't recommend changing the transmission oil because it's supposed to be good for a lifetime for these transmissions and said that changing it would just make it shift even harder because the oil would be thicker?

I just replaced the valve body on my 04 at 65,000 miles. Mechanic said when they keep a part as pricey as that ( 1200) in stock you know it has issues.

I flushed my trans at 110k, new filter too, it too had the same 2nd-3rd issue.

Another thing you can try is to find a good vw buddy with the Vag software and disable the fuzzy logic (adjust the shifting to your driving style), itll help out a little. At the least make it less awkward

Good luck.

Btw, ive got 121k on my 01M auto trans, i autocross the shizzle out of my car, shifts much better than it did than when i first bought it at 86k last year.

Not "like new",but service has helped my trans, i would recommend it.

I've had exactly this problem with my 98 2 ltr gas auto....between 2nd and 3rd I had big lurches forward. I was fretting about it from the moment I bought her and had her checked out.
Turns out it's the fuzzy logic computer thing, that learns your driving style and adjusts the way it changes gear. If you buy used, you are bound to drive differently to the person before you. Hence the confusion going on with the gear shifts.
I didn't really believe it until I had a dead battery one evening and Triple A replaced it right there and then. I've had a smooth ride ever since! That was 6 weeks or so ago. Replacing or unhooking the battery for a while seems to reset the computer.

Hoping it's just that for you.....

You can also reset the memory in the tcm by turning your key to the ON position, depressing the pedal to the floor passed the "click",hold it for about 6 seconds, release.

Another option is to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, but this may require you to enter your Radio Code

yeah i would seriously look into the electronics side of it. If anything major i would try replacing the selenoids. TCM is also a good place to start. Get a vagcom also, very important.

Ebay has great cables for 5.99 or so and then download the software from Ross Tech Vag-com site. The trial is more than enough to start.
