Default 98 new beetle 2.0

Hello everyone, I am new to this board and to VW's. My dad just bought a 99 5speed 2.0 gas. My question is when doing a fluid change, do we need gl4 or gl5 fluid? I searched but I seem to get different views. Also the manual list 02j and 02m transmissions. How can we tell the difference? Sorry for the mindless questions, just dont want to mess anything up. Thanks

GL4 only. No GL4/GL5 double spec fluids. The GL5 additives are bad for the brass syncros. Should take slightly less than 2 liters. Best bet is to just get VW fluid, the new G070 spec fluid is good stuff. Shifts like butter and is thin enough for those of us in the great white north where it can be 40 below.

02J is a 5 speed. 02M is a 6 speed.
