Default Slipping Clutch?

2003 2.0l, 5 speed manual Beetle with approx 30,000 miles - if you floor the throttle, the revs rise quicker than the speed of the car for a few seconds, then drop before slowly rising again in line with the increasing speed. Do you think thats the sign of a clutch on its way out?

definately. And to maximize the life, don't do that. Any time you feel the rpms taking away faster than your speed , you should let off the throttle and keep it from slipping.

You need a new clutch.

Certainly sounds like the textbook signs of a clutch going bad. As mentioned above, when you continue to "slip" the clutch like that, it will wear down any material that is left on the disc much faster, and can also glaze which would put the car out of commission until a new disc was installed.

The OEM replacement parts are fairly expensive, so most will upgrade the clutch when replacing it. Our Stage 1 Kits use a slightly larger single mass flywheel with a larger clutch disc (more holding power) and are much less expensive than the stock replacement parts.

Our Stage 1 Clutch Kits can be found here on the website:
