Default transmission stuck in third gear

Hello, I am experiencing problems with my 2001 vw beetle 2.0 gas automatic. The car is really sluggish off the line because it does not automatically downshift into first when I stop. The car also does not shift into overdrive either. If I manually shift the car I can accesss first, second and third but still no overdrive. I have read in other posts about the car going into "limp mode". How do you get the car out of limp mode? HELP!

Limp mode. You get rid of limp mode by fixing the problem that is causing it. Scan the TCM with VCDS to see what the problem is. Likely culprit is a speed sensor but there are other causes.

Best way though is to just scrap the autoturd and bolt in a 5 speed.

It could be as simple as your valve body being dirty. When you "manually" shift it you are bypassing the automatic process. The torque converter still act's just like a clutch, you will just have to pick your gear manually until you get it fixed. As far as overdrive, that's probably the valve body being dirty also.
