Default Your automatic Beetle and you.

First I will post wiring diagrams and then discuss the diagnostic tree on figuring out what is wrong with your transmission(s).

First up the 2.0L automatic 4 speed.

There will be more diagrams. More to come.

As you can see these diagrams are the diagrams that you would use to diagnose a transmission(electrical) problem.

Diagram #1

In the picture you can see a grey block labeled J217. J217 is the TCM (transmission control module) Also in the same picture you see another greyed out block labeled F125, this is your neutral start switch or range selector switch.

Diagram #2

Is a diagram of the wiring for your valve body (controls gear range and shift feel).

Diagram #3

This diagram is for the G38 and G68 (the "stuck in third gear" sensors)

If you copy these pictures, print them and put them on your desk lay them out (one next to another). The Germans use line wiring diagrams, also they have diffrent names for colors. Check the color index next to the diagrams.

This is a basic wire diagram, some models might have a different color code. I think these are from a 98-01 Beetle?

When you get a transmission code, either OBDII, Ross-Tech or factory scan tool. This topic will cover any and all codes with their direct test.

If any part fails, replace it.

Here we see a "valve body". Note the locations and numbering of the solenoid positions.

Hm. My 2004 NBC has been in the shop for 3 weeks and they are trying to diagnose the transmission problem. (I have really hard up and down shifts in between 1, 2, and 3rd gear.) and Maybe this will help? Thanks!

Also, when VW ran a diagnostic code, the code P0730 Came up..... sound familiar at all? :/

We are discussing the four speed automatic, but we will get to the tiptronic transmission soon.

It's perfectly fine. We will get to the tiptronic I promise you^^^

I tell you what, let's make a list of transmission symtoms that you have noticed with your failing transmission.

I will start it off.

1. Stuck in third.

2. Slamming into the next gear.

3. ?

Yep, those are the major ones, slamming into and out of the first few gears. Besides that, what happened twice was the stuck in 3rd gear thing. (The [P] [R], [D], [S] gears on the dashboard all illuminated, and the car wouldnt shift gears.... Aftter it was stuck in that mode for a while, is when I took it to the shop.... and 3 weeks later, still waiting. So any new advice and info would be great! You seem very knowledgable.

Here is a TSB for the transmission

0100-01 01/28/2000 A/T - DTC's/Improper MIL Illumination/Poor Shifting

Condition:
Transmission in limp mode with no MIL illumination (it is also possible that the MIL has flashed but did not stay on).

The following symptoms accompany the transmission related DTC fault codes listed below:

^ MIL illuminates once, for a short period

^ MIL command "ON" message is stored

^ Vehicle defaults to third gear, or a combination of second and third gear (limp mode)

^ Shift indicator (in instrument cluster) changes to a dark back-ground.

^ Shift indicator (in instrument cluster) does not function.

Here is a list of related transmission codes.

See table for part number / EPROM levels of TCM's with corrected software.

Service:
This improper MIL illumination is caused by a 1CM programming design deficiency and cannot be corrected.

DO NOT! Replace a TCM for listed condition unless repair procedures (per diagnosis in Repair Manual) require replacement.

If you got a P01748 or 00268 which valve in this picture would you check? And would the transmission be slamming into gear?

T12 12-pin connector. This connector is what runs the solenoids in the transmission.

Here is what it looks like (in the car and still plugged in)

^^When diagnosing bad wiring you will need this.^^

Nice thread, NewBeetleMechanic. Definitely appreciate the technical information. No problems with mine so far (knock on wood) but subscribed for future.
