Default clutch replacement

Doing engine work on my 2002 Beetle with the 1.8L engine. When I split the transmission from the engine I noticed some loose small rings. Ended up being the springs from the friction plate. Want to replace the plate and the pressure plate. Parts stores sell the two plates but VW sells the plates with the flywheel. The guy at VW said they sell it as a set because the new plates wont work on the original flywheel. Any recommendations of what I should do. Price difference of $500 would like to save a little but don't want to do the wrong thing.

The stuck dual mass flywheel is quite expensive to replace, our Stage 1 clutch kits ar ea great option for the 5 speed cars. We convert over to a single mass flywheel that uses a slightly larger clutch disc. The larger surface area offers extrea holding power, more than enough for cars with upgraded software and turbos.
