75w-90 synthetic gear oil.

If you are going to be doing any amount of your own repair work I would strongly advise you to invest in a Bentley manual. Available in paper (~$80) or DVD (~$90) version from Volkswagen Parts at PartsHaus.com | Free Shipping!

These two images came from the DVD version, but I have a paper version as well. Both versions have their pros and cons, but I wouldn't be without either of them.

Its not a cable, its a three (I think) wire sensor on top of the speedo shaft. Its on the back of the transmission, on top of the final drive.

Take that Haynes manual you bought and throw it in the garbage. It has no usable detail at all and has a large number of inaccuracies. The Bentley manual is at least 5 times bigger.

My brain hurts from your spelling, grammar, sentence structure and lack of punctuation. Please try to put a little effort in.

That said, I'll try my best to answer yet again. The speedo sensor is ON TOP of the final drive. Remove the airbox and LOOK on the top of the transmission, at the back. The drive gear and sensor sticks up at least 3" and is impossible to miss. G22 is the sensor in question.

The whine could be coming from the trans or the final drive, and could be caused by lots of things. The pump or something else hydraulic related in the trans, bearings, spider gears in the differential, the differential pin could be coming loose. Yes, there is a seal that separates the ATF and the gear oil in the final drive, that could be your problem. If the fluid level in the final drive is high, then it probably has ATF in it. You should be able to recognize this if you pull some fluid out of the final drive. There is no drain plug on the final drive, you will have to use an oil extractor or vacuum pump of some sort.

If this is anything other than low fluid in the final drive (the axle flange seals could be leaking for example)...this isn't going to be something you can fix yourself. You can't take the differential off the transmission, it is a single unit, the case would need to be split and everything would need to be disassembled. And to be frank with you, if you need this much help to check the fluid level, then you have no business even thinking of doing anything else. No offense intended, I just call it like I see it.

Good luck.

BTW...the final drive/differential will not run long if its low on fluid. Often, the case will get damaged and the entire unit (transmission too) is scrap and not rebuildable.

This unit was a replacement, and the installer never added any fluid so it ran dry. But if yours is running low, the effect is the same. The big gear you see, that is one of the final drive gears that drives off the output shaft of the transmission. Part of the differential is integral with it, the spider gears are inside. The pin that you see that holds the spider gears, often comes loose and the whole thing comes apart, trashing the diff/case and thus the whole transmission.

On the right side of the housing, you see a black tube that threads through the top of the transmission. THAT is the speedo drive shaft, and the sensor is on top.

I'm not real sure you are going to be able to remove that cover in-situ, its pretty tight back there. If you do, let me know...and make sure you get a new gasket.

Good luck.
