Default Automatic Gearboxes - VW Extended Warranty

Received a letter today from VW of America indicating that the automatic trannies may be prone to 'hard shifts' between 1st & 2nd and 2nd & 3rd. Several complaints have been submitted by VW Owners.

As a result, VW is extending the warranty on all the transmission valve bodies for 7 years or 100,000 miles (from the original in-service date), whichever comes first. Have to fill out a short form & mail it back to VW of America to coolect on any repairs made to-date.

Anyone else get this letter? Anyone else experience this issue?

Thumbs up Excellent Post!

No, but wouldn't expect to as I just mailed the "Change of Ownership" card.

But, OMG, excellent post! Thank you! This affects mine, and so many other Orgers Bugs.

Letter goes on to say that extended warranty covers all automatics from 2003 thru 2008. So that includes the 4 speeds, too.

Talking Happy Days!

I just got home and found the Christmas present in my mailbox!! Thanks to everyone that pressed on this issue and didn't let up. My wife's Beetle has been sitting in the driveway for a month now. It'll drive, but only when cold. Thankfully, the dealership is not too far away. They already know that it has a bad valve body, so I'm calling tomorrow!

If you can scan it as a .pdf doc and post it, I'm sure there are members will need the form needed to collect for previous repairs.

If you don't have the ability to scan as a .pdf or turn it into one, I can do that if I receive it in my eFax. P/M me and I'll give you that number. I'll then post it up as a .pdf that everyone can print out from this thread.

You might, if factory owners records are up to date. Letter stated it covered certain automatics from 2003 thru 2008.

well thats cool the Vw is stepping up . I wonder what years the bugs were from the people that complained . I know my 04 would shift hard when it was cold but my truck does that as well . but it would smooth out and shift like Buttah once the fluid was warmed up

I drive my new beetle in this morning to the dealership, they told me the warranty for my 2003 new beetle convertible expired April 17, 2010. There is no code for my car. I can feel the hard shift from time to time. not sure to do yet.

Had the Dealer looked at (and documented) a visit by you, about this problem, before 4/17/2010? You would probably have recourse if so!

Has anyone found out why these valve bodies continue to fail? It seems the "lifetime" fluid may get a little dirty and cause the valve body to stick a little. I wander if anyone has attempted to soak the valve body in something after removing it from the trans to try to free it back up? My car had a new valve body installed around 50k due to harsh shifting. It is an 01M 6 spd.

Maybe changing the fluid and filter every 50k would keep this from happening?

Default some facts about new beetle transmission valve

Here are a few facts I learned from my transmission shop regarding the premature failure of the valve body on the new beetles. This is a very reputable shop (Mr. Transmission) that does warranty work for all insurance and extended warranty companies in the Atlanta area. Normally, the cylinders in a valve would be harder than the pisons but in the VWs the pistons have a hard, wear resistant, plating and the valve body is a softer aluminum (unplated)alloy so the pistons eventually eat up the cylinders to the point where fluid leaks past the pistons and causes all kinds of problems. When the metal starts breaking up it probably just speeds up the process. Because the valve body wears out instead of the pistons, the whole valve has to be replaced. I just paid $4800 for a total rebuild on my daughters 2004 six speed convertible and the valve was the main culprit. I also got the letter from VW and will be filing a claim. Now if VW would just step up and admit that their convertible tops won't stay bonded to the back windshield I'd be set!

That's great news for all the owners effected. We just got a brand new 01M in my wife's '01 Jetta about 4K miles ago, but we had the 10year/100K powertrain since we bought it new and are fast approaching the end of that. The process was hassle free and easy at our local dealer.

This is a great time of year for Dealer Svc Dept. Work is slow, should be a lot of "specials" going on, plus they love warranty work. If's something is just marginally warranty it might be a good time to get a call in your favor.

Default replacement valve body is it original or modified

Hi, just got the letter, its my wifes car and its just come at the right time we were at the point of scrapping the beetle as it was too dangerous to drive,

QUESTION

Does anyone know if this is a like for like replacement part, the reason I'm asking is are we buying only another 40-60K of mileage.

Has anyone had this warranty performed yet?

Just curious as to the part replaced
