Default Newbie questions; 6AT transmission identification and swap questions

Newbie questions; 6AT transmission identification and swap questions

2005 6AT 1.8T (hatchback not convertible)
How can I identify transmission?
have searched for while I got confused.

I am pretty sure my beetle is 2005 6AT 1.8T hatchback.

followings are what I found
2005
A.T., 2.0L, 4 spd (Htbk), (trans code "FDF")
A.T., 1.8L (turbogas), 4 spd (Htbk), (trans code "FDC")
A.T., 1.8L (turbogas), 6 spd (Conv), (trans code "GHE", "HGA")
A.T., 1.9L (turbodiesel), 4 spd, (trans code "FDB")
A.T., 1.9L (turbodiesel), 6 spd, trans code "GHG"
A.T., 1.9L (turbodiesel), 6 spd, trans code "GYS" tiptronic
A.T., 1.9L (turbodiesel), 6 spd, trans code "HLJ"
A.T., 2.0L, 6 spd, trans code "GGZ", Conv
A.T., 2.0L, 6 spd, trans code "GGZ", Htbk
A.T., 2.0L, 6 spd, trans code "HFZ"

2006
A.T., 1.9L, trans code "HQP"
A.T., 1.9L, trans code "HXV"
A.T., 2.5L, code "HTU"

Another question
my transmission is BAD. Hard shift from 1st to 2nd
visited VW authorized service center
They found NO valve body issue.
quoted more than $6k from VW (to put new transmission)
I cannot afford that
I am thinking about transmission swap (maybe used?)

Can I put 2006 2.5L 6AT transmission in my 2005 6AT 1.8T??

Sorry for the stupid questions with bad English.
Thank you in advance,

The most cost efficient is to go to a manual transmission. It will cost in the ballpark of $2k vs the automatic which are closer to the $6k you were quoted.

I believe (not 100% sure) that all of the hatchback automatics with tiptronic are 5speed Automatic, not 6speed automatic. It is one of Vw's more reliable transmissions that they have used from about 2002 to 2005 until it was replaced by the 6 Speed Automatic.

Thank you for your input, Fl_bug

my wife cannot drive manual.

I think mine is 6AT tiptronic automatic.
I think 03~05 convs and 05 hatchs are equipped 6AT.

you're right, dnyed.

my 6AT (aisin) tiptronic gone bad (2005 1.8T with aisin 6AT). I think I need new transmission.
(only if possible) I want to put "VW 6AT DSG" in my 05 1.8T beetle instead of aisin 6AT tiptronic.

So anyone know whether it is possible or not.
I have heard transmission swap, from aisin 6AT tiptronic to VW 6AT DSG, on Jetta V.

Talk to VW again. They have extended the warranty on those transmissions to 10 years/100K miles. Let them fix it instead. Everything is controled by the valve body in one way or another. If you have a transmission falure, you can bet it had something to do with the Valve body. Especially in the 09G's!!!
I'm going through the same thing except mine's a '03 Vert and they don't cover the '03's back far enough even though mine only has 70K miles on her. It's not right!!!

What is this you speak of? Wife just called said she had a problem with the car not shifting out of 3rd. 2003 1.8t 6AT NBC. If they extended to 10yrs we should be covered.

Thumbs up

I'm a little confused!
"I am pretty sure my beetle is 2005 6AT 1.8T hatchback."
What are you not sure about?

If your not sure it's a hatchback, it is if it's not a convertible.
If your not sure it's a 2005, check the VIN, the digit in the 10th position is the year.
If it's a Turbo, you'll see the turbo unit mounted to the engine.

If your not sure it is a six speed, slap the shifter over to the right side and the indicators on the instrument cluster will change to the individual gears, instead of P, N, R, etc, but I'd bet if it's an '05 and A/T, it's a 6sp Tip

The specific trannie code is located on the mini build sheet label in the spare tire well, if it has come dislodged and wandered off. There may be another pasted in your Owners Manual.

Postscript: Yes 10 yr/ 100k miles, perhaps this is an idiot Dealer who hasn't heard. I have a copy of the letter and the claim form if the work has already been done and PAID for. Ppl getting these done all over the place!

You are correct, I went back and checked the letter. I'm sorry, and not trying to get a new rumour started here. I took the 100k from the poster quoted here. Perhaps he/she knows something we don't. Teach me not to check things before posting.

Sorry, sorry, sorry!

No, you wont. The Turbo is on the back side of the motor and is about invisible. The turbo as well as the intercooler are hidden from view on the 1.8T. Unless the car is on a lift, these parts are hidden to the naked eyes.

Since the car is out of warranty, any idea what to expect to get the valve replaced?
