What Should I Know to Replace Speedometer Drive Gear?

I need to replace the speedometer drive gear (9 in attached picture)in a 1998 auto Beetle. I have seen a couple of post where this has been done. I know I need the gear, a gasket, tool for half shaft bolts and gear oil. Is there anything else needed other than normal tools? I was disappointed to find that this does not seem to be covered in the Bentley manual. Any help with steps required would be greatly appreciated.

Just removed the cover on the back of the differential case and the drive gear is not there - in the normal location. I could see the driven gear on the speedometer drive/dip stick but the gear that drives it is not there. Must be in the bottom of the case somewhere, could not see too well. I guess the next step is to disconnect the right half shaft and remove the drive flange, not sure exactly how to install the new gear yet.

I dont know much about the autos but my 2000GLX 5spd broke the sender in the trans. It lasted about 2 days till it lunched the trans. And I mean lunched, there was shrapnel like you wouldn't believe. Cost me almost 3g's to replace. Sorry I cant help much, just thought I would share my little trans misery.
