Question transmission replacement options

so it looks like i'm going to have to have a new transmission.

i've been told that vw used about 11 different transmissions before the settled on a japanese one. i've also been told that i could put an older transmission from another VW into the new beetle, and would loose overdrive, but would have a much more reliable one. does anyone out there have any knowledge about this?

Any chance you'd be willing to swap in a 5-speed? Much more reliable and longer lasting than any VW automatic.

No problem. Wasn't sure if it was something you considered. And you have a pretty darn good reason for not having one!

Not sure about the earlier autos in these cars. I know the 3-speed autos from the early 90s are pretty solid. My FIL had one in his Vanagon that lasted 260k+. The last 60k, it was leaking trans fluid pretty bad. Topped up when it shifted bad and then it was fine. Pretty tough transmission for sure. But the 3-speed sucked...hit your top gear around 50mph so it was screaming on the highway.

For what its worth, there is a place that is selling brand new from Germany VW 4-speed autos for less than $2k, which is a serious deal, especially since they are brand spanking new! I've heard of people paying upwards of $6k for a reman unit...

Not sure if you have the 2.0 or 1.8T but here is the link: VW Automatic Transmission! - PartsPlaceInc.com
