Default Hard Tranny Shift

Hi Y'all,

I had a quick question and was wondering if any one else has experience this issue: I have a 05 NBC with an auto tranny with 35,500 miles on it. When I am driving it at 50 mph then slow down to 25 mph to stop, the tranny shifts so hard that you think you are being re-ended. Also, from first gear to second every once in a while it will shift hard. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Thanks.

THE trans is under an extended warranty for valve body issues from my understanding.

Really??? I just had it at the dealer and they didn't say anything! Is that under the 7 year or 10 year? Was this a common problem? Thanks so much for your quick response!

Did you take the car to the dealer because of the hard shifting or for something else?
Yes to the problem being common. Just do a search here for tiptronic problems or hard shifting. I received a letter from vwoa and a card regarding this issue. Do the ownership update with VWOA and you will get one too. Anyway, as Jason said you are under warranty. (7 years)

can you manually reset the shift points to factory default like you could the old mk3's?

i have no idea if this will work on the mk4 platform but this only takes a minute to try and wont hurt anything. try these two things, only one of them is correct for the auto trans but i always forget which so i end up doing both

1 insert key and turn to on pos
2 gas to floor hold for 10 seconds
3 let up on gas completely
4 key out

or
1 gas to floor
2 put key in & turn to on position wait 10 seconds
3 turn off key remove
4 gas up

if it is anything like the mk3's that will reset the factory shift points and might resolve your problem. again this might (probably) wont work on the beetle but worth a try since it is free and takes a minute to do.

I am a little relieved to hear that this seems to be a common problem. My bug has 435k on it and just started shifting really hard a couple of weeks ago, though it seems to come and go. I really have to muscle it into first and second, but am fine once I hit third and fourth. Its shifting fine, its the actual stick that is just hard to get to go where it suppose to!

This, that is being discussed, is a problem with the 6spd automatic "Tiptronic" transmission. You, having a standard shift, have a different problem altogether.

435k! Is that miles?! Probably one of the highest mileages I've heard of on a NB. What engine is in that car? TDI I imagine?

You probably just need a shift linkage adjustment, or replacement of shift linkage components. I know I had trouble getting into gear for some time and then my plastic shift carrier level broke. Got it replaced and my linkage was adjusted slightly and shifted like butter afterwards. Same story for my hubby's VR6 Passat when he had it...you couldn't get the car into 1st gear without going into 2nd first and even then it was difficult. Adjusted shift linkage and it was all great.
