Well today it poured down and we encountered some flash flooding on our way to my parents for Easter Dinner. Our NB did well enough; however there was a surprise.
When we tried to leave, it would not shift; I could not get it our of gear. I always put mine in gear when I park it. So I pumped the clutch 6-7 times and then I could get it out of gear. I was then able to start the car; however it would not shift into any gear while the car was running and there is NO CEL Light. So I turned the car off and it would not shift into any gear either. So I pumped the clutch 6-7 times, again and I could shift gears; however I noticed that it never would shift into any gear with the motor running. Not running, it will shift gears if you pump the clutch; running never shift gears. I did take the air box out and looked for leaks (there were none) and check the brake fluid level, which was normal. So I have read a few high water tranny threads, but those all involved automatics and mine is a 5 speed; however I will be disconnecting all connectors and cleaning them. Now aside from the Shift Carrier Linkage Lever on my '98, I have not performed any transmission work. I replaced the Clutch Slave Cylinder and the Clutch Master Cylinder; which did not fix the problem ... The O2J Transmission DIY is here ... The APH-O2J Clutch DIY is here ... The Transmission is an O2J-EBQ ...

OK the new slave cylinder is in but I still cannot shift gears
We did have some issues bleeding it as it would not bleed only ooze, so I will be bleeding it again. |

Sorry about your transmission woes, D2Beetle. I hope you can figure this out soon; I'm sure you do, too.
How much high water are we talking about? I surely don't want this to happen to me or anyone else.

Well my second attempt to bleed the Slave Cylinder was identical to the first; so I have ordered a Master Cylinder and will be replacing it. The Master Cylinder DIY Thread is here... Last edited by D2Beetle; 08-15-2011 at 02:11 PM.. |

Well I have replaced the Clutch Master and Slave Cylinders and I still cannot shift gears. So it looks like I will be doing a Clutch DIY. I am still not convinced that the slave cylinder bleed
was done right and I did it three times. It just did not feel right, either time.So if anyone has done their own clutch replacement I ask that you share your experience so I can get a better understanding of what "Challenges" I might encounter doing a Clutch DIY... or should I just put my safety helmet on and be done with it. Ok, just so I could say, "... been there, done that." I went searching for any and all sensors; I found two. I cleaned them and still I cannot shift gears.
The car does start and runs excellent, even with the MAF and air box disconnected, so I ran a VCDS Scan and this is what it says... I have not bleed the brakes yet, but I have pumped them alot and the ABS light did go out, but came back on. So after I bleed the brakes that should solve the ABS errors. Sensor Two is located above the Right Wheel Drive Axle, where it attaches to the transmission and under the gear shift cabling. Last edited by D2Beetle; 09-28-2011 at 07:09 PM.. |

Well I am going to take out the transmission to determine what the deal is... not what I wanted to do but at this point, but it is the only thing I have not done.
I will be taking this one in small steps as I do not yet have all the necessary tools, Special or otherwise. So I will work as far as I can with what tools I have then pause, order the needed tool(s) and begin again. Here is the Engine Support Tool that I am using. Here is the Transmission Jack that I am using. Last edited by D2Beetle; 10-22-2011 at 04:40 PM.. |

OK, the car is up on Jack Stands. Had to have enough clearance to work and get the transmission jack under it.

Well I got everything taken apart; tried to take the tranny out by myself ...
... not gonna happen, so I called my brother and father and tomorrow we take the tranny out of the car. |

OK, the transmission is out and the O2J Transmission DIY is here ...
OK, the APH-O2J Clutch DIY is here ... I have not found anything that would prevent it from shifting; I have hand turned the transmission drive shaft and it turns oh so easy and makes no noises. Although I did accidentally knock off the top of the Speed Sensor; I snapped it back together and we will see if it still works. So now I have to order a clutch kit and three more special tools to get the clutch and pressure plate off. This is where I feel the problem is. I will also be changing the gear oil and choose Redline MT-90; it is a GL-4 Spec 75w-90 fully synthetic gear oil. VW claims that their gear oil is "Lifetime"; I guess that depends on how you define "Lifetime". For me nothing last forever and I decided at this point that I will change the gear oil on every clutch change. Last edited by D2Beetle; 11-14-2011 at 06:01 PM.. |

OK, I have received the clutch kit (yellow rectangle) and two of the three special tools. Waiting on the Fly Wheel Lock Adapter Tool.
