Default '00 NB Transmission Noise

Yesterday while driving, the tranny starting making a loud tapping noise when I would either let off the accelerator or depress the clutch. Could not feel anything through the pedals. The tapping frequency tracks with the road speed.

Even the slightest acceleration would make it go away, or at least make it so I could not longer hear it.

About 205,000 miles on the car. Any ideas on what this could be? I've found a post on Vortex about a 2.0 Jetta with similar symptoms. Suggestions for that were rivets in the diff gave out or the small output bearing might be failing. He never said what it actually was and just replaced the tranny.

Thanks
Ed

I finally had time to get Sluggo in the garage and jacked the front end up. (been out of state a lot this year working)

Spinning one wheel makes the other spin in the same direction and I can hear the tapping noise, though just barely coming from the differential area.

So it looks like something in the diff gave out. Just not sure what.

Any experienced guesses on if I should be able to replace the diff (or rebuild it) or replace the tranny?

Also, is there a good manual on tearing down the tranny? The Bentley just shows removal and installation.

Unhappy I've got the same symptoms!

Any luck with the differential? I've got the exact symptoms and I'm dreading the potential repair bill. Any good news or advice that might belay my apprehension?

Thanks!

Rick

After I got the tranny out, it was obvious it was not the diff. Spinning the axle hub you could hear the tapping coming from the tranny side.

I ended up finding a low mileage used one for about $350, so I didn't bother opening it up to see what it was.

Probably not what you wanted to hear.
