I am grabbing a left side drive shaft on Friday. Does it matter if it is a Beetle one or Jetta one? I believe they are all on the A4 chassis, so I am assuming all the different drive shafts and trannys are all interchangeable.
Is there any tips anyone has?
We are recoding my computer with vag-com so I should be covered on the computer side of things.
Am I missing any essential pieces? Any nuts and bolts that I will need to make the project go better?
With the help of a few friends, this will be my first attempt at doing an automatic to manual swap. Hopefully it goes well! I am so excited!

There's a lot of info over on TDIclub, read through the 5 speed swap thread. Axles are interchangable, except from VR6 models.
What engine is in your car? The only ECUs that can be recoded are the TDI's, if you have a 2.0 or 1.8t you will need a manual ECU.
Make sure you get new flywheel and pressure plate bolts, as well as all mount bolts. You need a different starter too. Make sure you have a trans jack to take out the auto, they are heavy beasts. You will also need to support the engine before you remove the transmission.
Lets see, what else... leave the body mount in place, just drop the auto out. Don't attach the mount bracket to the trans until you have it up in place and bolted to the engine. With it on it is very hard to clear the frame.
A Bentley manual is a must have, torque everything to spec. Beware on the mount spec though. Older manuals give the spec as 66 ft-lbs + 90 degrees, it should be 74 ft-lbs with no additional turn.
That is all I can think of right now, let me know if you have any other questions.
