Default Delayed shift?!

Ok, So the past couple weeks I noticed, I cant get my poor car to "GO". Which at 1st didnt really bother me, but now I am freaked out. My mechanics which are WONDERFUL wont really have the time to put her up on the lift, cold, and check her trans fluid. and I know that the 1.8 trans are HIGHLY known to fail... ALOT. I do wanna put a 5 spd trip in it but its going to have to be bough piece by piece. But until then, I am not sure whats up. It shifts late when going into 3rd and 4th gear at like 4-4500 RPM's. which I know is NOT normal for my car. I dont wanna stray to take her somewhere else, but I dont know what else to do.
I also noticed that early in the morning, and at night, the whole car runs better when its "cool" out. So I am debating a cold air intake but dont know which one would be best. Any suggestions or instructions, would be awesome
Thanks!

How many miles on the car? Have you had the fluid changed? That would be my first step. And its not just the 1.8T transmissions, its any of the O1M code 4-speed autos, which were used in all auto NBs until '03 I think. They all fail.

115K sadly no, cuz the guy who works on her (VW and Audi only mech's) are backed up for 2 weeks. So no check or change and I dont trust ANYONE around here but them I keep hearing and seeing that they all fail at one point or another. Damnit VW what were you thinking?! :'(
