Question Please help...1998VW Beetle...only goes in reverse,please help

1998 VW Beetle automatic....cranks great...just wont go into gear...was driving it one minute and the next thing you know it will only go into reverse...and well, we cant drive backwards can we...lol...please if you can help me...She has to have this car for her schooling.....Id like to be able to fix it myself if possible...and pictures would be GREAT.....lol.....thank you so much ....ps, the gear shifter isnt loose, it fills normal, just slides without going into the proper gear
