Default automatic gearbox speed sensor

Hi,
We have a 2001 auto bug with 159,000 miles we have owned it from new with very few problems other than it will not change up from 3rd gear, does anyone know the location of the auto speed sensor as there are three speed sensors fitted to this model, fingers crossed it's the sensor and not time to change the gearbox ,i should say that other than the box not changing up it's good
thanks

Do you have any codes? I wouldn't go throwing parts at the car without troubleshooting first.

Have you ever changed the fluid and filter? What makes you think the speed sensor? How long has this been happening?

If it were a manual the speed sensor is really easy to swap out, however on an automatic it is a lot harder to get to and without the right lift and tools you will never be able to reach it. I am with Smileybug here I would have it scanned for codes and properly diagnosed before I try and replace parts especially labor intensive parts only to find out that it has nothing to do with your actual issue. More than likely it is the valve body starting to fail. It is more responsible in switching gears than the speed sensor is. If there isn't sufficient line pressure coming from the valve body the clutches can not switch gears. The 4 Speed O1M transmission is especially prone to such failures. I would have it professionally checked out. And before you swap out the 1700Dollar Valve Body, I would obt in buying a brand new transmission which can be had for around $2000 plus shipping on line.

Changed the speed sensor today, the gearbox now changes up properly, cheaper than a new gearbox, will change the oil tomorrow, you get to the sensor from the top with a short 10mm ring spanner remove the plug first
