Default 1998 VW Beetle lost 3,4,and 5th gear?

Hi.. I purchased a 1998 VW Beetle. At first it had all gears except 5th. After a short drive, it dropped 3rd and 4th? No noise, just nothing. could that be the cables? Shift motion feels hard in 1 and second. any thoughts?
