Default Dead auto?

Alright those around here know me and know that I stay away from the dreaded O1M at all costs, but we found an '01 TDI Jetta with 114k with a potentially dead one for a crazy price so we jumped on it. We do have a manual swap donor car available to us for cheap as well so that will be happening if this trans is actually toast but if its not, then we have no problems driving it for a bit if we can fix it without much effort.

Got a number of codes. Story is the guy we got it from got it from a cousin. You can shift into drive, 3, 2, 1, N, etc with no problems, but the car will just rev and not move. Seems like its stuck in neutral. But the car won't move backwards in neutral (park seems to work).

Transmission error codes:
00652
00652 - Ross-Tech Wiki
00652 - Gear Monitoring: Implausible Signal

Possible Causes
• Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Level not OK
• Vehicle Speed Sensor (G68) dirty/faulty
o Impulse Wheel dirty or Installation faulty
• Gearbox Speed Sensor (G38) dirty/faulty
o Impulse Wheel dirty or Installation faulty
• Multi-Function Switch (F125) faulty (but not detected)
• Clutch or Valve Body faulty
• Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Pump faulty

Possible Solutions
• Check Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Level
• Check/Clean/Replace Vehicle Speed Sensor (G68)
• Check/Clean/Replace Gearbox Speed Sensor (G38)
• Check/Replace Multi-Function Switch (F125)
• Check/Replace Clutch and/or Valve Body

Special Notes
• The ratio of engine speed to gearbox output speed in the currently engaged gear is implausible.
• Slip rpm with torque converter lock-up clutch disengaged must be greater than stall speed.

00300 - Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93) - Implausible Signal

Possible Symptoms
• MIL On
• Transmission Not Shifting Properly or in Limp Mode \

Possible Causes
• Wiring/Connectors from/to Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93) faulty
• Voltage Supply for Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93) faulty
• Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93) faulty

Possible Solutions
• Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93)
• Check Voltage Supply for Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93)
• Check Measuring Blocks for Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93) Readings
• Check / Replace Transmission Fluid Temp. Sensor (G93)

01192 - Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch
01192 - Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch: Mechanical Malfunction

Possible Symptoms
• Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch slipping

Possible Causes
• Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch faulty
• Valve Body faulty
• Internal Failure in Transmission

Possible Solutions
• Check Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch Slip

Special Notes
• When found in 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (01M), check Measuring Value Block (MVB) 007.
----------------------------

We do have VAG-COM. Need to check out that measuring block. We did get a number of codes of short to ground and other electrical issues. Any chance that there could be something wiring wise causing all of these? Stuck in neutral seems like an odd failure, almost like a sensor isn't working right.

We are fully prepared too if it ends up being that the trans is just crapped out. Again, we have all the stuff needed for a swap to a 5-speed. But hey, if we could get the auto working again, we'd be all for that until it does finally die. 114k seems a bit early for death, but its a TDI so who knows. Good news is the rest of the car is in fantastic shape and the engine sounds very healthy. A timing belt job is in the future probably, but we'll inspect as well.

Will also try clearing the codes and see if it does anything. maybe a fluid and filter change is in order too. To start we'll be tracking down electrical I think.

I know this isn't the most technical of forums...we'll likely end up in the auto section of Vortex but I figured here would be a good place to ask too.

Looks like a solid car from the other post.

I would start with the simplest first and work thrugh the list.

Fluid level I'd open the plug and add a little to see if it flows out the overflow tube. Might give you some idea of what the fluid in the tranny looks like.

Then the electrical grounds and sensor

Automatics are not my thing, but if it were me I would change the ATF and the Gear Oil; then the following sensors, G68, then G38, then G93 and then F125.

Just my .02 ...

Yeah I don't know how far we're going to get in to trying to fix it if its much over some stupid wiring or an easy sensor. We have a 5-speed donor ready to go so its not a huge deal, and we don't really want to drive the auto. But hey, if we could get it working with little cost then we will.

Cleared the codes last night. Battery isn't strong enough to get her to turn over so we need a charger. After we get that (wednesday) we'll start her up and see if anything has changed.
