Default I've got a question...

I was playing around with the decoder page that tells you what all those numbers on the sticker in the trunk mean. I found something weird..I thought my car was a 4 speed auto, but this says it is a 5 speed auto.(see below)
Weren't all the 5 speeds the tiptronic style? Mine is not of course, or I would not be asking this probably silly question.

They only made the O1M 4 Speed Automatic until 2002. Then sometime in 2002 they did switch to the 09A 5sp Tiptronic transmission Years used: 2002, 2003, 2004.

So Yes, you should have a 09A transmission code 5 Speed tiptronic.

But it doesn't is what's weird. No + or - on the shift console or room to move the shifter. What is up with that?
The second picture in this thread shows my console and shifter..
Some pictures..

Hmm, Perhaps you have very tiny Paddle shifters hidden behind your steering wheel

Or perhaps the sticker in your trunk is wrong? I couldn't find where the cut off was for the O1M 4speed Automatic. I know it was in 2002. After that they came out with the 09A 5 speed triptronic which was put in cars until 2004. 2005 was the first year for the 6 speed tiptronic. However, I think some convertibles already had them in 2004.5

Very very tiny invisible paddles...lol. The sticker looks like it has been in there for quite a while, but who knows if it is the right one. I couldn't find anything on the cut off dates either. She was built on April 10th of 2002. Very weird.. I dropped her off yesterday at my friends transmission shop to get the fluids changed, so when I pick her up Monday, I will ask Rick what it is. Is there some kind of number or markings on the trans itself that will tell you what it is?

Hmm, not really since it doesn't show her sub code in any of them G0F?? It also doesn't show the sub codes for the 09A transmission which she might have??
You can check with your mechanic since the tiptronic transmissions have the valvebodies one the side rather than on the bottom of the transmissions. I guess the mystery remains.
Let me go check my Bentley manual...

I'll be back

Well, the Bentley tells me that there were only 2 automatic transmissions not counting the DSG (02E) that was only used on the TDI models.

It shows the 01M 4 speed 1998-2005
and the 09G 6 speed 2003- on.

The sub code letters for the 01M were:
DYQ,ECV,ELY,EPG,FDF - 2.0L
EFB,ECP,ELU,ELZ,EPC,EPH,FDC,FDG - 1.8L AND 2.0L
DMP,ECN,ELT,EPB,EPP,FDB - 1.9L

The sub code letters for the 09G were:
GHE,HGA,HHT -1.8L
GGZ,HFZ,HMD -2.0L
HHG,HTU -2.5L

No mentioning whatsoever of any 5 speed automatic transmission.
Only the DSG, the 4 Speed and the 6 speed Autos.

So my guess is that you do have the 01M transmission. It does hold 5.3 liter of transmission fluid and does have a seperate final drive which takes .75liters of 75W90 Synthetic gear lube.
Make sure your mechanic doesn't miss that.

The 6 Speed tiptronic uses 7.3 liter of fluid and combines the transmission and final drive. Meaning it doesn't have a seperate final drive fluid.

Hope that helps shed some light on the situation.

I found the paper I had written all those numbers on to enter them in the decoder..the first numbers I had written down were these..
ICI8H3
AVH FDF
LD1D LJ

So there is the "sub-code" FDF for the O1M trans. But there is also that G0F code for the 5 speed auto.
How bizzare..
In reference to the seperate trans and final drive, a while back I took DaZee to my mechanic to have them change the differential fluid and they told me they could not do it because the diff and trans were all in one case, so they told me I should take it to a transmission shop. That is why I took it to Rick to have it done.
So is it two seperate deals contained in the same case with a seal or whatever between the two to keep the 2 kinds of fluid seperated ( I think I read that on here somewhere) , or is it all together and shares the same fluid?
I am really confused now. lol

The plot thickens ... to know for sure, look on the top of the transmission, just below the radiator hose and you will find out for a certainty.

I will have to look at that when I pick her up from Rick tomorrow. He can probably just tell me what it is.

The ATF fluid and the gear differential fluid are seperate on the 01M transmission. They are not mixed and are two different kind of fluids. According to Bentley the ATF fluid is VW Part number G 052 162 A2 and the capacity is 5.3 Liters or 5.6 quarts. However when you change the fluid you can only get in about 3Liters or 3.2Quarts. The differential takes VW Part number G 052 145 A2 and holds .75 Liters or .8 Quarts. VW deems it to be lifetime so they don't show a change interval for the rear differential.

Well, tomorrow turned into another tomorrow and finally yesterday I got to pick up my girl. I still haven't had time to look at the actual trans plate, (it was dark by the time I got home, I will look this afternoon after work), but I talked to Rick the trans guy, and he said my transmission is absolutely an O1M (4 speed) model. So, why it has that funky code is anybodys guess. Unless it was originally slated to be a 5 speed tip on the assembly line, and a customer state side wanted a Double Yellow NOW and no tiptronic, so they just threw a 4 speed in to get it shipped and delivered.
Anyway, she has new fluid in the trans and diff and is happily buzzing along.

Transmissions have two 3 digit codes O1M (Primary) and a ??? (Secondary). It is the second code that denotes the gearing. I am really curious what your second code is.

Here is the Thread noting the Transmission Codes for my NB's.
