Default Savannah GTG?

I know we've been trying to get the FL GTG worked up and running. Seems like failing interest and busy schedules are keeping it from getting off the ground. But what if we did something in Savannah? I've been in GA for 2 years now and have never been. I hear it's beautiful! It's an idea. I'd still love to go to FL and do whatever is planned there. I know for Al's sake we should have a FL GTG since they are so few and far between (for whatever strange reason), but if that falls through, what do you guys think of going to Savannah? Let me know.

We would be up for that. We did a Miata Trip a few years ago and it was great. Our group was large enough we got a private dining room at Lady & Sons. We also had a private trolley tour and did a road trip to the island with the light house and fort then ate brunch (cant remember the name right now)
We had scheduled a night ghost walk but a thunderstorm canceled that.
If you decide to do one I would be glad to get the info from the folks that planned the one we did.

I might even could get the wife unit to go for Savannah... she is Soooo not into the car GTG scene... but Savannah that might be doable. I know she wants to go eat at Paula Deen's for sure.

I would love that! That sounds like it would be a lot of fun! If the FL GTG falls through, we'll do it. And even if it doesn't, maybe we can still do it

will send out some emails tonight. We are not really active in the Miata club but have kept our membership up.
What time of year would we be looking at?

Well all the Miata folks are on their way to the Dragon this weekend so I did a bit of research on my own
Hotels- look to run $70-$90 a night ( this is for October and not a group rate, once we know how many folks may want to come and a weekend then we could get see about a group rate)

Lady and Son's dinner- group rate of $26 each ( buffet, beverage and desert)

City tour by trolley- $20-25
Walking Ghost tour -$20

Tybee Island- Tybee Island, Georgia (Savannah's Beach) Tybee Island Visitor Information Guide

we went to Tybee on Sunday,(lighthouse, museum) had brunch at this place then headed home_ DOLPHINREEF.COM

Now my question, we also talked about a NC GTG this fall. Not sure folks would want to do 2 in Oct so am open to suggestions.

I am working on a route for the NC thing as well

This was just more of a suggestion if the FL GTG didn't work out. Which that looks like it's going to happen. So, I think we can put this one on hold unless someone REALLY wants to do it.

So, since the Fl GtG turned out to be super awesome, I'm on a GtG kick. So, who's interested in Savannah? Or offer an alternate location. This is just a suggestion right now, nothing is set in stone, I still have to work out when as well. So, let me know what'cha think.

Well if you guys do decide to do a GTG in Savannah, ya'll will need to see if you can find this road: Grand Prize Of America Ave. It appears if you look at it with Google Earth or Bing 3d Maps, to be some sort of racetrack, it has red and white curbby things like you see in road course races and even has a checker board start finish line? A friend told me about how he stumbled acrossed it a few years back so I decided to look for it. It is on an Island which appears to be in the Savannah? River looks like you can get to it from 17 to Wayne Shackleford Blvd. To Resort Drive which dumps right into it. If you have google earth or any other good 3d map program take a look

I believe it's on Hutchinson Island - right across from the downtown riverfront area. Could definitely be a good photo op.

Missed the last Savannah GTG and I love Savannah, so I'm up for it, but not too soon (money and other considerations). Also, I seem to remember on one of those islands a casual but nice seafood place (you toss the debris into a pail in the middle of the table). And some kind of Gullah/Geechee eating place. Also, is anybody interested in jazz?

Something non-car-connected to do in Savannah: take a camera through the historic district and photograph architectural details.

Checked out two places Irina & I ate at in Savannah 11 years ago. They're still there.

Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House (912) 232-5997
107 West Jones Street / Savannah
M-F, inexpensive, Southern, B & L, no credit cards, boardinghouse style
Quite a wait sometimes.

Crab Shack at Chimney Creek (866) 789-CRAB
40 Estill Hammock Road / Tybee Island
"where the elite meet in their bare feet"
daily, moderate, seafood

They have things like Lowcountry Boil, which is pretty much the same as Frogmore Stew, which isn't a stew: you toss sausage, corn, potatoes, shrimp &c. into a pot of hot water or broth and fish it out when it's done. (Cousin to crawfish boil, now that I think of it.) The resultant broth makes a great soup base. Also many other kinds of seafood.

The Geechee/Gullah place: my mistake. That was on an island close to Beaufort.

We stayed at the youth hostel, which I don't recommend: great location in the historic district, but unfriendly. To my regret, I think one has to stay outside of the historic district in a Ye Olde Cheapo. Aside from the regular city tours, there are a number of tours associated with Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I think it would be fun to drive around each and every one of the beautiful squares (of which there are 22).

There is also a Hostel in the Forest with treehouses and geodesic domes closer to the Florida line. Rather buggy and not close to Savannah.

Among the many historic buildings/graveyards/&c: Second African Baptist Church, not for its architecture but because Gen'l Wm T Sherman publicly read the Emancipation Proclamation there and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave the "I Have a Dream" speech there.
