Key fell out of my key fob?

I tried searching but I didn't find much related, surprisingly. I guess it's easier this way anyway.

Today I noticed that my key was loose off of the remote. I slid the pin back in and tightened it back up. Drove to my destination. As it was time to leave I unswitched my key and it basically fell out in my hand. I was stranded without my spare for a while...but I made it to work. :p The remote works fine. Looking for any repairs or solutions so I'm not throwing $200 away.

Yup... the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw those pics were JB weld!!

And if you don't like the ugly geryish silver it turns out to be after you're done, you can always dab on some of that funky nail polish you have over it.

You can get parts for the key at

sidewinderkey.com

The cam you need is near the bottom of the page.

You can also get a new flipkey and open it up and swap your rfid and key blade.

Random ebay link, you will need a new vw logo too. It needs to be removed to open up the flip mechanism.

Your key might not have a RFID in it, cars with the oval remote usually don't have the immobilizer system.

the same thing just happened to me. The break looks identical.

If you rig up some leverage can you use the key blade and the fob buttons separated?
Sounds like some of you have had success epoxying the blade back on, but I would think if there was a break, even adhering the blade back on would not remedy any severed electrical connection necessary to use the key to turn the ignition etc, as far as the immobilizer and that goes. But maybe they are touching firmly enough for a connection, or maybe the connection isn't an issue.

What do you guys think? I really don't want to have to get a new fob, and I'm very handy so any DIY solution is fair game.

Hit up a junk yard and get a matching type flip out key. All you are really wanting is a good retainer piece that the key blade fits into. You will be swapping your key blade into that retainer.

There is a roll pin you have to work with to get the key blade out:

The other thing is you have to take the key unit apart.

Disassembling your key — deAutoKey

That page shows swapping over the RFID transponder for the Immobilizer. Don't bother. You only want to swap out the broken metal retainer.

This can all be done 5 to 10 minutes, nothing too hard about it. When it is done, you will still have the same key blade and same RFID transponder... and a good flip out key.
