Default trunk (boot) emergency release

the boot (trunk) of my wifes 04 cabriolet has jammed. People keep mentioning about an emergency release, but when I look through the ski hatch in the rear seat I cant see anything.

When I try the button inside and on the remote, the lights flash and thats it, it doesn't even sound like the motors trying to pop the boot. When I get it open, I will look to see if its the motor or electrics, but first I need to get the boot open.

Can anyone tell me where it should be or a photo of what I am looking for.

Many thanks

There is a lever/handle near the bottom of the trunk lid inside cover for emergency release. Government mandated if someone is locked in the trunk. Get a flashlight, it is light green in color. The newer models have a red plug at the top of the trunk inner cover that you an turn, remove and pull to release the trunk.

thanks Tom

I must be blind, because i have looked in the boot and I can see a plastic inner cover for the boot lid, but no sign of any lever / handle of any description/colour.

Is there any chance you or anyone else can post a photo of what I am looking for, but a friend has also looked and he cant see anything either.

Give me an aircooled VW and there is not much I cant do (have a 65 split bus so you pretty much have to be handy with tools) so I should be able to cope with finding an emergency handle!

Default Trunk Photo

Item 1 is the lever or handle to open trunk and item 2 is the plug to remove and pull to open on some models.

Across the pond eh? Well, I don't know for sure. If you don't have either I can only assume . . . yes.

PS. Need to complete your profile data.

Your inner trunk is definitely different from the US models. We never had a TDI NBC here. You may need to consult you local dealership. Good luck in getting your trunk open.

Your boot lid will not have an emergency release, as obviously the UK driving population has no need to protect itself from heartless miscreants who would lock children away inside NBC boots (although I remember pictures of a remarkably agile and flexible adult lady who somehow stuffed herself inside one), or overly-litigious lawyers like those over here. I believe it's a NA feature exclusively...

As far as your original problem: Without the emergency exit handle, I've got nothing...

cheers everyone, had a play and unbolted the 2 x 10mm bolts that appeared to hold on the warning triangle and the cover pulled off, giving access to the motor and linkage, so I popped the boot open. It was a loose wire in the end and all sorted.

Perhaps I should leave a socket set in the boot, in case anyone ever gets locked in!

Did you ever get your trunk open? If so, how? Let us know the outcome.
