I have a 2000 Beetle, 2.0 manual trans. Last night my duaghter called and said it would not start (she lives 50 miles away), I had her hold the gas pedal down and crank it, it eventually started. Any idea as to the cause or a direction to search? I am going to pull the codes tomorrow because it now has a check engine light on, but am hoping for thoughts.

Also the car has 120000 miles and has never had the timing belt done (could be related???) are there any good walk thru's for this job?
And finally, should I change the crank position sensor, cam postion sensor and fuel pump relay as trouble shooting meassures?

Start with scanning for codes. Its really just total speculation without them.

As for the timing belt, get that done ASAP! Its very, very long overdue on all fronts, mileage and age.

OK, so the engine code indicated Crank Postion sensor. I replaced and issue solved. Also ordered new timing belt kit including water pump, pully and new serpentine belt. Will install next weekend. Thanks for the help. Anybody got a good write-up for replacing timing belt?

Also, the engine mount bolts are use only once bolts which must be replaced with new, properly torqued, bolts.

While "you have it apart", you might as well replace the thermostat and the coolant. I'd personally only use the VW specified G12 coolant as mixing coolant types is a bad thing (turns to goo and clogs coolant passages).

You'll need some way to support the engine while the engine mount is out of the car (we used an engine hoist). Also, the proper tool to set tension on the timing belt tensioner will help a lot when you do this job. I picked up one on the Internet for about $25.

It's not that hard of a job, but it will take time and patience to do everything right. If the timing belt slips, or breaks, on these engines, the pistons hit the valves which can cause a lot of very serious, very expensive, engine damage. It took my dad and I one very long day to do this job because we like to take our time and torque everything to spec.
